Pain is considered to be chronic if it lasts for more than 3 months and the situation has not been improved after routine medication treatment. Chronic pain can interfere with daily activity. It can also lead to depression, anxiety and trouble sleeping, which subsequently make your pain worse. This response creates a vicious cycle that’s difficult to break. Apart from joint, muscle and neurogenic pain; rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and cancer pain are also included in chronic pain.
From the perspective of Chinese medicine, chronic pain is perceived as a disruption in the flow of ‘Qi’ and blood. In terms of chronic pain treatment, Chinese medicine is playing a critical role on it as it offers a wide variety of therapeutic options for chronic pain. They are:
o Chinese Herbal Medicine:Chinese medicine will be prescribed based on health condition and body constitution of every individual.
o Acupuncture and Moxibustion: Acupoints will be stimulated by needles based on meridian theory and the cause of pain in order to achieve pain relief and promote overall wellbeing. While Moxibustion stimulates the acupoints and meridians by heat. It could be applied as direct moxa or ginger moxa to enhance the heating effect.
o Tui-na:It is a form of manipulation originated in China and it functions to relax muscle and relive pain.
o Auricular Acupuncture Therapy:Auricular acupuncture focuses on acupoints on the ear that may help a wide variety of conditions including pain. Recent clinical studies have shown that auricular therapy is effective when employing on pain and emotional management.
o Cupping Therapy:Vacuous cups will be sucked on skin to improve circulation and repair affected area in order to relieve conditions that cause pain.
o Herbal Paste Application:Combining the holistic view of Chinese medicine, the theory of meridians and syndrome differentiation, herbal paste is applied on acupoints to dredge meridians, regulate ‘Qi’ and blood, and enhance the efficacy of relieving pain.
o Exercise:As part of Chinese medicine treatment, practising Tai Chi and Ba Duan Jin regularly can help joint rehabilitation and enhance the effectiveness of pain management.
o Food Therapy:Dietary recommendation will be suggested by Chinese medicine practitioner based on the combination of Chinese medicine theory and modern nutrition in order to adjust the body constitution and relieve symptoms.
The aforementioned therapies not only can relieve the discomfort caused by chronic pain, but also help to solve other mental and physical conditions caused by pain. With the aim of encouraging the public to aware of their health risks brought by chronic pain and providing an additional solution to manage chronic pain, CUHK Chinese Medicine Clinics (CUSCM) are introducing ‘Chinese Medicine Treatment for Chronic Pain Program’, offering individualised Chinese medicine treatment service in chronic pain.
