Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, belongs to the category “Acne” and “Acne of Lung Wind” in Chinese medicine, refers to a chronic inflammation of the hair follicle and sebaceous glands. It often occurs on the head and face, affecting appearance, which causes patients to lack self-confidence and have low self-image. Improper handling of acne may even lead to permanent scarring. Acne is mostly caused by wind-heat, lung-heat, blood-heat, blood stasis, dampness-heat, insufficient kidney yin, emotional distress and syndrome of depressed liver Qi transforming into fire. These syndromes can be categorised into wind-heat in the lungs, spleen-stomach dampness-heat, depressed liver qi transforming into fire, and blood stasis with congealing phlegm and others (physical condition).
