Integrative Medicine Treatment for Pregnancy Preparation: A Pilot Service Program

People in modern society live a very busy life, and most of them prefer a small family. For pregnancy preparation, couples are usually recommended to go to Western medicine for examination while using Chinese medicine to regulate body constitution. If there is a problem associated with pregnancy, it can be detected at an early stage. The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong shows that even for fertile couples who have regular unprotected intercourse, the chance of getting pregnant in one’s menstrual cycle is less than 25%. After the 40 years of age, the chance of successful pregnancy gradually decreases.

The Integrative Medical Centre is now launching the ‘Integrative Medicine Treatment for Pregnancy Preparation: A Pilot Service Program’, which aims to help those couples who are preparing for pregnancy and enhance the pregnancy rate. Research in Chinese medicine has confirmed that Chinese medicine treatment can be used to assist for pregnancy through improving body constitution, regulating menstrual cycle and promoting ovulation, increasing the number and quality of effective follicles. Moreover, it can relieve the symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation. Based on the Western medicine investigations and Chinese medicine diagnosis, our Chinese medicine practitioners will formulate appropriate therapeutic plan. After getting pregnant, Chinese medicine can be used to help prevent miscarriage and relieve tension and anxiety. Since female and male each accounts for 30% to 40% of the infertility factors, both parties are recommended to participate in assessment and treatment in order to achieve the best result.

In practice, specialists in reproductive medicine will perform a series of baseline fertility investigations to understand the female reproductive condition and the quality of male sperms, and a treatment plan can be formulated for specific needs. Couples should actively consider seeking early examination and treatment if one of the following conditions exist:

Male

  • Failure to conceive after 1 year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Age 35 or above
  • History of ectopic pregnancy or repeated miscarriage
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
